Guwahati: Project Udaan, a collaborative skill development initiative by Resonia Ltd. and Lok Bharti Education Society, has successfully trained 111 local youth in Assam‘s Chirang district, with 56 graduates immediately securing jobs in the electrical and beauty sectors. The milestone was celebrated during a Certificate & Placement Ceremony held at the Lok Bharti Skilling Centre in Kukurmari on Tuesday.

The initiative marks a significant step towards bridging the employment gap and fostering self-reliance among young men and women in the Bodoland region. Officials highlighted the programme’s role in equipping youth with industry-relevant skills, thereby creating sustainable career pathways and contributing to the socio-economic development of the area.

What was announced

The successful completion of Project Udaan’s training programme and the immediate placement of more than half its graduates were announced during a felicitation ceremony in Chirang district. The event saw the presence of key dignitaries, including MLA Paniram Brahma and Chirang District Commissioner Gakul Chandra Brahma, alongside corporate representatives, local officials, and the families of the graduates.

Resonia Ltd., a power transmission infrastructure developer, and Lok Bharti Education Society, a non-profit organisation with 27 years of experience in vocational training, partnered to deliver the specialised workforce skills training. The programme initially enrolled 120 candidates, comprising 60 aspiring beauticians and 60 electrician trainees, with 111 successfully completing the rigorous curriculum.

Background

Assam has long grappled with the challenge of youth unemployment, a persistent issue that successive governments have sought to address through various skill development and entrepreneurship promotion initiatives. As of June 30, 2026, over 1.54 million individuals were actively registered as job seekers with the state’s employment directorate, highlighting the scale of the challenge.

The Assam Skill Development Mission (ASDM), established in 2015 and operational since January 2017, serves as the apex body for all skill development activities in the state. Its vision is to build the capacity of unemployed youth and deliver quality skill training that leads to meaningful employment and entrepreneurship.

Despite increased educational attainment, a significant mismatch often exists between the skills possessed by graduates and the demands of the labour market. This structural gap necessitates targeted vocational training programmes that are aligned with industry needs. The “Skill India” initiative, launched by the Government of India in 2015, aims to equip the nation’s youth with relevant vocational skills to improve their chances of employment and entrepreneurship.

The state government, under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has prioritised preparing Assam’s youth for both local and global employment opportunities, aiming to build an “Atmanirbhar Assam.” Efforts include initiatives like the CM Flight Scheme, which provides Japanese language training to connect youth with international job markets, and various programmes under the Assam Skill Development Mission.

Organisations like Lok Bharti Education Society have been active across India for over two decades, focusing on vocational training, education, and community empowerment, often collaborating with corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Resonia Ltd., formerly Sterlite Power, also engages in CSR activities aimed at community development and sustainable futures, leveraging its expertise as a power transmission infrastructure developer.
