Assam Government Initiates State-Wide Vacancy Mapping for 2 Lakh Jobs

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has launched a comprehensive, state-wide vacancy mapping exercise across all its departments as part of its ambitious ‘Mission 2 Lakh Govt Jobs‘ initiative, aimed at creating two lakh government employment opportunities over the next five years. All administrative departments have received directives from the Personnel Department to submit detailed information on vacant posts and to nominate a nodal officer by June 17, 2026.

This extensive exercise seeks to identify existing and anticipated vacancies, assess future manpower requirements, and streamline recruitment planning across government departments, field offices, autonomous bodies, colleges, universities, missions, societies, and semi-government institutions. The initiative underscores the state government’s commitment to fulfilling its electoral promise of large-scale job creation for the youth of Assam.

What was announced

The Assam Government’s Personnel Department issued an official communication directing all administrative departments to furnish detailed information regarding vacant posts under their jurisdiction. This directive follows a detailed review meeting held on May 27, 2026, by a task force headed by Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota.

The task force, constituted to formulate, monitor, and implement a roadmap for the government’s employment commitment, discussed assessing existing and future vacancies, manpower needs, and recruitment strategies. Departments are required to submit data in a prescribed format and designate a nodal officer by June 17, 2026.

Why it matters

This vacancy mapping is a crucial step towards the fulfilment of ‘Mission 2 Lakh Govt Jobs’, a flagship programme launched by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. The mission aims to provide employment to two lakh unemployed youths over the next five years.

The exercise will also involve assessing year-wise retirement projections, identifying direct recruitment vacancies, and recommending reforms to ensure faster and more transparent appointments. This systematic approach is expected to address the persistent challenge of unemployment in the state, which, according to the Economic Survey of Assam 2025-26, stood at 3.9 percent for persons aged 15 and above in 2023-24, an increase from 1.7 percent in 2022-23.

Background

The current initiative builds upon the Assam government’s prior commitment to job creation. Before the 2021 Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had pledged to provide one lakh government jobs. The government claims to have exceeded this target, appointing over 1.64 lakh youths in various departments during its previous tenure between 2021 and 2026 through the Assam Direct Recruitment Examination (ADRE) and other departmental drives.

Chief Minister Sarma has consistently emphasised transparent and corruption-free recruitment, a model that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly encouraged other states to emulate. The state’s unemployment rate has seen fluctuations, with urban areas facing higher stress at 7.4 percent and urban women being most affected at 11.8 percent in 2023-24.

The government’s broader vision also includes fostering entrepreneurship and self-employment through schemes like the Chief Minister’s Atmanirbhar Asom Abhijan (CMAAA), alongside direct government recruitment.

Key details

The directive from the Personnel Department mandates all administrative departments to submit comprehensive data on vacant posts. This includes positions in government departments, field offices, autonomous bodies, colleges, universities, missions, societies, and semi-government institutions.

The task force, led by Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, held a review meeting on May 27, 2026, where discussions included identifying grade-wise vacancies, year-wise retirement projections, and opportunities for direct recruitment. The deadline for departments to submit this crucial data and nominate a nodal officer is June 17, 2026.

Reactions

“There’s no time to rest in our quest to deliver on our promises. My team is already at work to identify vacancies, create the roadmap, map out departments and bodies and chalk out the time frame to deliver on the commitment of two lakh Govt jobs,” Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

The Chief Minister has repeatedly stressed the government’s commitment to job creation and administrative reforms. The initiative is seen as a reinforcement of the government’s dedication to employment generation amidst a growing demand for jobs among the state’s youth.

What’s next

Following the submission of vacancy data by June 17, 2026, the task force will analyse the information to prepare a detailed roadmap for recruitment. This roadmap is expected to include annual employment targets, department-wise projections, and robust monitoring mechanisms to ensure a structured and transparent approach to public employment in Assam.

The task force is anticipated to submit its comprehensive report within three months of its constitution. The government also plans to introduce a new domicile policy, making only those born in Assam eligible for state government jobs, a move aimed at securing the rights of indigenous people.
